Ever had moments where choosing to be grateful made a huge difference in a situation? Does gratitude come easy for you or is it something you have to work at?
In our family, we've been working at strengthening the muscle of gratitude.
Some exercises we have introduced are:
Saying thank you — even for the little things
Appreciating each other — even the differences
Keeping a gratitude journal — this helps us to remember
Praying — giving thanks to God
As we have worked on this area of our marriage, our family has become stronger.
Grab your favourite drinks and watch this short video about why we think gratitude is so important in marriage.
After watching the video, take turns asking and answering the following questions together. Listen actively to each other — with gentleness and humility — so you each feel heard and free to share.
Was “thank you” used much in your home growing up? How does hearing the words “thank you…” make you feel?
How can I show my gratitude for you in a way that’s meaningful to you?
Out of the four ways to cultivate gratitude (saying thank you, appreciating each other, keeping a gratitude journal, praying) is there one you would like to work on?
Write five things you are grateful for regarding your spouse and give them the list. If you have children or grandchildren write a list for them also.
Take a day trip. Jump in the car and see where a tank of gas can get you. Even checking out the next town over can feel like a little adventure, especially when you're doing it with your favourite person.
Plan a date for each other that you know the other would be very grateful for.
“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (ESV)

If you lived out these verses every day, how would it strengthen your journey and relationship with Jesus?
